On driving a motorhome

Author: Shannon  //  Category: RV Shopping

It’s pretty easy, or so we’ve been hearing from folks we’ve talked to about it.  I don’t know. I have notoriously bad peripheral vision and a tendency to not pay close enough attention to what’s going on around me.  Scott - he likes to ride the middle line (oncoming traffic be damned) and tends to drift.  We can’t stand (and when I say can’t stand, I mean absolutely cannot stand) each other’s driving, so I’m sure there will be some major screaming and yelling once either one of us hops behind the wheel of our new home on wheels.

At any rate, I found an article on a Canadian web site about how it’s supposedly easier than ever to drive one of these things.  We haven’t taken one for a test drive yet, so we honestly don’t know.  Luckily, Scott used to drive moving trucks, so he’s got some experience behind the wheel of a big rig.  Me… I’ve pretty much driven small vehicles all my life, so I’ll have a pretty tough go of it.  Sometimes driving Scott’s Envoy is a little tough for me, if that’s any indication.

Oh, just get ready to sit back and take on the role of being a passenger. When it comes to RVing and married hetero couples, it’s usually just easier that way. Being a fiercely independent woman (hell, I ride motorcycles!), at first it really got to me that my husband was doing all of the driving. But then, after a few hundred miles, I realized “Hey, I can finally get some real knitting time in!”

The deal we have is that he drives the rig, and once we are unhitched, I drive us in the truck around town.
